Using Unit Studies

Unit studies are a popular way for homeschooling parents to allow their children some freedom in regards to their schooling. This type of learning material allows for the following of a child’s interests while still covering all of the basic educational goals. Since they are centered around the child’s interests, the learning that is occurring is likely to be a more hands on application of the facts rather than a random generation.

This method of learning involves taking a subject that has piqued the child’s interests, airplanes, for example, and trying to tie most, if not all, of the learning materials to airplanes. Reading could involve the parent reading books about airplanes to the child or, if the child can read, taking turns reading books to each other. Even after a child can successfully read on their own, it is still important to read aloud to them.

Math could be real life applications of problems dealing with airplanes. You could have your child find out what the length of a landing strip would need to be for a certain airplane. Or you could use small model airplanes as manipulatives for doing basic math problems if your child is at that level.

Exploring the history of the airplane could also easily involve geography. Spelling words can be tailored to be all airplane centered. You could even take a field trip to a nearby airport or museum that features airplanes. This would enable you to implement a hands on approach to the subject.

Everyone seems to want the latest and greatest phones, and teens are no exception. Once they get that cool new Android phone in their hands, what are they going to add to it?

If you just got your teen an Android phone, such as an LG Android phone, be ready for your son or daughter to ask for apps! Applications and customization is what the Android is all about! Application designers know this and market apps specifically for teens. For example, Shazam is one of the hottest music apps available for teens. Shazam not only plays music, but it also provides information, such as what artist is singing the song and where the artist is performing on tour.

What teen isn’t into social networking? One of the most popular social network sites is Facebook, and it can be downloaded to the Android phone so teens can share pictures, update their status and write on their friend’s wall. The best feature of Facebook for the Android is that it is free.

If your teen is the type to lose things, the Wave Security Mobile System app is definitely worth the investment. This handy little app can use GPS to locate a lost or stolen phone (thieves beware) and also has the capability to back up texts, contacts and call logs.

Everyone loves ring tones, but they can get expensive to purchase. The app Ringdroid allows teens to edit and create ringtones from the MP3 music on their phones.

There are many apps out there for teens, so let your kids personalize their Android phones
